Definition:
Spirituals, or negro spirituals are a genre of music that they wrote
and sang to give them hope that one day, they will reach freedom in
Canada
Harlem Gospel Singers- Go Down Moses
This
song, Go Down Moses, is from what I believe, asking God to give them
freedom. They sing of the Egyptian times and refer to the Pharaoh as the
oppressor and the jewish people as the slaves. They can relate to the
song significantly well because of their slavery and desperately wanting
freedom.
Listen, by Beyonce
You should have listened, there is someone here inside
Someone I thought had died so long ago
Oh, I'm screaming out and my dreams'll be heard
They will not be pushed aside on word
This
song is a much more modern version of what happened with the Negros in
the 1800’s. The lyrics above state that her voice is not listened to and
like many of the Negros, her voice, her soul and dreams could not be
fulfilled because they were ignored. Similar to Beyonce, the Negros
dream to find freedom would not be pushed aside.
